You can run such algorithms over any monoid, even (Z,*) or (N,+) or
something like that, but over most monoids it will be trivial to break.
For best safety properties you'll want a cyclic group with the DLP
using a well chosen base element (one with a large order).
Wait -- I thought we were talking about DLP-based algorithms.
