Rational for 283 as a reducer for AES in MixColumns

Hello Folks,

Would anyone happen to know the significance of why 100011011 (283) is
used as a reducer while mixing columns in Rijndael?

I understand it is the result of 2^8 + 2^4 + 2^3 + 2 + 1, however that
is about it.
