i wrote a snippet of code to incrementally count every possible salt that
could be generated by the program i wrote, that's what it spat out after 2.5
hours of running through to completion.

Remarkable. My pocket calculator evaluated 10^10 - 10^4 in about 5 seconds, and it could only come up with 9999990000. What's your extra one?
