There's already a body of established practice. You can get the
/Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard/
I'm guessing the application is real estate management (i.e. a site
where prospective tenants submit rental applications for credit
checks) or something like that, not payment processing. It's scary
enough when the info is given on paper to the rental office since it
finds its way to a credit agency, which at least has some clue (hah!)
about handling this type of data. I'm cringing at the idea of small
real estate offices taking this type of info online and trying to keep
it secure. Sigh.
