Following my previous posting I've had some private mail with Peter
Pearson with the intention of understanding how I can describe the
problem and what sort of samples to provide.

Using a slightly modified version of Peter's wording :-

I need to establish the algortihm that maps the data in the left
hand column, of the samples below, onto the data in the right column.

Both columns are character strings. So far as the left hand column
is concerned alhough most examples only include digits, any
character which is legal in a DOS 8:3 file name would be valid. The
right column never contains anything other than 0..9 and a..f
probably because of the workings of the algorithm.

The algorithm also uses other unknown input data but those other
data are known to be constant for the tabulated values.

I would be happy to hear from anybody who would like clarification
or more samples to work on.
