President Bush signed a directive this month that expands the
intelligence community's role in monitoring Internet traffic to
protect against a rising number of attacks on federal agencies'
computer systems.
The directive, whose content is classified, authorizes the
intelligence agencies, in particular the National Security
Agency, to monitor the computer networks of all federal
agencies -- including ones they have not previously monitored.
"The president's directive represents a continuation of our
efforts to secure government networks, protect against constant
intrusion attempts, address vulnerabilities and anticipate
future threats," said White House spokesman Scott Stanzel. He
would not discuss the initiative's details.
Sounds like a good idea to me.
If it weren't for the fact that, imnsvho, they were monitoring those
agencies anyway. Anytime I see a "confidential" directive that directs what
has been confidentially accomplished, I grab my fucking copy of ToR close
to my breast.
