try the pdf documentation in CrypTool:
http://www.cryptool.org/
(click on 'online help, documentation, and tutorials')
the pdf CrypTool script, which can be downloaded separately, is a very
readable
elementary description of the basic math for cryptography
after giving the background math, it reviews how it is applied to RSA
and then reviews hash functions and digital signatures
it does 'not' discuss the actual mechanics of of block or stream
symmetric ciphers,
so, if your goal is to understand those too,
maybe someone else here can provide a reference for a text, or
collection of explanatory articles that are simpler than Applied
Cryptography, or Handbook of Applied Crypotography
vedaal,
Thanks very much. This will get me started for sure.

Jeff, Thanks. I think this will be my next stop after the Cryptool intro above.
