Applied Cryptography is an excellent book, too, as you can see from the
responses given on the newsgroup. However, it does cover more mathematics
than Kahn's book.

Applied Cryptography is written by Bruce Schneier, an actual
cryptographer and crypto designer.

It covers more mathematics than Kahn's book because it is more about
actual cryptography than Kahn's work, and is more about how and why
than about who uses it and what intelligence agency or entity is doing
something with it.
