Can't comment. I still live in hope.
I do too, but as the T-shirt says "This gene pool needs a bit of chlorine."
A moderated group would be too much work for any small group of people and
wouldn't work anyway.
Agreed. I already don't have enough time to even read or post half the time.
Or only respond to posts that are from verifiable e-mail addresses,
excluding free accounts like Hotmail and MSN.
I (ashwood@xxxxxxx) resent that, but I don't think much of anyone would
claim I'm spoofing anyone. I'm just kidding, I guess I could switch over to
any of the other addresses I have, of course most of those actually get more
spam than this one:
Junk mail from Usenet is not really an insurmountable issue.
Perhaps a PGP registered public key with photo ID would work - it may not
be necessary to sign every message or even any messages (unless you are
being spoofed). PGP is free for private use and runs on most platforms.
I could manage that, of course I seem to be vaguely unspoofable anyway as I
seem to be capable of using a perfectly good scalpel as a shillelagh. Of
course at that level most of us are highly capable of recognising the
writing style of regulars, and a simple registry of people would suffice.
I am thinking the object is not to stop anyone posting - not even the
malfunctioning idiot but to deny interaction and information to the badly
behaved.
Anyone new can post however they like, they are new after all. And then
anyone can send a pointer on the "correct" method and required id. If
they go away (and the fence was set low) it's a fair bet they had no
genuine interest in crypto.
Anyone wanting to post a result anonymously still can, they just can't
interact until they identify themselves.
Just my early ideas, unrefined and maybe of no interest.

I originally sent a slight variation of this to Tom, but I'll repeat it
here. I have been the target of more than my fair share of death threats,
and morons. Here's how I'd deal with it in Tom's situation:
Reply to each of the messages he knows about with a tally of arrests,
something like "Well that should just about take care of the really stupid
ones, the police just called to tell me they finished the 47th arrest"
should dissuade people from replying, especially if the tally is true. Of
course I have always kept a strange sense of humor about mine and have
actually had my threatener laughing by the end of the phone call.
The man in the bright orange shirt, who, since he posts from
MSN, should apparently be anonymous.
