Hi,
does anyone know a software which can mount encrypted containers as
drives (like TrueCrypt or FreeOTFE), which runs without installation
from a removable medium ("traveller mode", like TrueCrypt or
FreeOTFE) and which not only runs under Windows 2000 and XP but also
under Windows 98 (neither TrueCrypt nor FreeOTFE do that)?
FWIW Truecrypt 1.0 (withdrawn for copyright/licence reasons) ran on
win98. It is still out there for those who look in nooks and
crannies.
Note also that Truecrypt (even traveller mode) requires administrator
privileges on the local machine in order to be installed (anyone can
later run it).
Some (but not all) USB flash drives have an encryption scheme that
*doesn't* require admin privileges - Kingston Data's Traveller Secure
(AES- 256 & up to 4Gb) is one such drive (unfortunately it works only
on win2k and up).
Regards,
truecrypt will run not installed. it only need extraction, or a
previous install. since its jsut a directory on my machine, it doesnt
have any pointers in the registry, and still works, i would have to
say it works without an install.

If true, your experience contradicts Truecrypt's documentation:
Using TrueCrypt without Administrator Privileges
