Re: Programs for breaking Classic Ciphers

Mike,
Not sure why it would crash but I can see from
the cipher that my program would not be able
to crack it - it only cracks monoalphabetic ciphers
with *proper word divisions* not ciphers that have
been segmented into set-length blocks.
The secret code breaker is more flexible than
my own program, as a result of using a different
cryptanalytic method, and would be better suited
for ciphers without proper word divisions.
thanks,
Cory

Although I only maintain the Linux and online versions
(http://evercrack.cjb.cc) I am curious as to when and how
it crashes... Is there a particular ciphertext or feature you
are using that causes the crash? I'd appreciate any
info.

Hi Cory, The program crashes when I load a ciphertext file and then hit 'Crack.' You
may also want to know that I'm running the win GUI version of Evercrack v1.3.4. The
cipher is a keyword, mono substitution cipher.

DUAMB CQCMS AQDRS DMRJN SBAGC IYTCY ASBCS MQXKS CICGX RSRCQ ACOGA SJPAS AQHDI ASBAK
GCDIS AWSJN CMDKB AQHAR RCYAE

I got this from http://www.secretcodebreaker.com/scbsolvr.html

I'm running XP, SP2. If you want, I can send you the error report that windoze
generates. It's a bit lengthy, as I think windoze generates a ton of redundant info.

Rest assured that your program is hardly the only one that crashes under my XP,SP2.
In fact, my personal opinion is that it probably has more to do wth microsoft and
less to do with your program. Let me know if you want the error report. If you have
any suggestions I might try, please let me know. Thanks.
