suggestions on a relevant NG. Any suggestions on the
newsgroup to post to?

This is the right ng. But you need protocols, not just an algorithm.
You got a good protocol suggestion, which was SSL. You didn't like
the suggestion, so you propose to roll your own, putting you back
where you started.
