I'm not sure I agree. On USENET, it is very easy to see where I post.
But if I post on lots of web page forums and what-not, perhaps using
an alias like "cuddly" or something (and using a local program to
generate e-mail-adress images), it could be very difficult to map my
posting habits.
Imagine what our advertising friend could do with a database of posting
habits linked to e-mail adresses, plus intimate knowledge of the spam
scene - something he needs because he "combats" spam. (How's that for
suggesting nefarious plans?)
In fact, marketing people would love such a database. Anyone want to
patent that business process?
Well, if you were concerned about your identity you'd probably not spew
your email address all over the web. Suppose you posted as cuddly, why
would you use your usenet persona email address?
Suppose you're on a PHPBB and you post as cuddly, make up a cuddly
email address and use JLs service. people ALREADY know someone posts
as cuddly. All you'd be doing here is telling JL that someone posts as
cuddly on a PHPBB.
If there is no direct link to your other personas then JL really hasn't
learned anything.
Under most circumstants "your concern == moot."
That depends on the paranoia level. I think you are a bit too relaxed
today.
I'd like think I'm just more pragmatic than most.
