Public Key Infrastructure

Can someone please tell me with regards to PKI (Public Key Infrastructure),
what exactly do you need, besides the root certficate, in order to establish
that someone is the genuine holder of the certificate?

I am revising for an exam and I can't find the answer anywhere and I'm sure
this question is going to come up.

Help appreciated,

John.
