That's like saying French and German are "closely related" because
they're both spoken in Europe.

Tom St. Denis just proves he doesn't know French and German.
Let me see... French is a language from the branch of languages known as
the "Romance Languages", and German is from a totally different branch
known as the "Germanic Languages".

French is -indeed- a Romance language, and German is -indeed- a Germanic
language, but that does not mean that the two languages are not related, or
quite similar. Even languages as different as Russian and French have
distinct similarities (such as the word "étage"). But you wouldn't be able
to make those comarisons, now, would you.

Um ... ok. I know a lot of french people who don't speak German and I
know handful of Germans, all of whom don't really speak french.

Sure they share a word or two in common but that's to be expected. And
fundamentallly they may share some long past distant roots. They're
different enough though, that a German speaker would not be understood
by a French speaker and vice versa and that's my point.

Sure you can write C looking programs in C++ but if you actually use
C++ properly [e.g. grammar] it doesn't look anything like C.
