we've got to make sure today's internet users are protected from

Why? If they're trying to harm others, surely it would be good
for agencies that can do something to prevent it to find out about
the intentions beforehand. If they're not trying to do any harm,
the government isn't going to waste resources monitoring them.

Sure, there is potential for abusing such information, which is
why there needs to be effective oversight. Perhaps your energy
should be invested into improving that aspect, instead.

I don't care if I am being spied on IF the only thing the information
gathered will be used for is prevention of terrorism. On the other hand -
what people are afraid of is that this spying will be incorporated into a
fascist movement to suppress free speech, or that phones will start being
tapped and crimes identified and prosecuted.

I joke way too much about bombs, nerve gas, Osama Bin Laden, anti Bush
propaganda, conspiracy theories etc. to have not gotten the attention of
some TLA at some point in time (at least since the domestic spying act).
Nevertheless, I doubt they take me too seriously as it is all in jest.

All you need is to make some enemy in the gov't, for whatever reason, and
suddenly the sense of humour disappears, and your statements become
serious. Then try to prove "they were just a joke". Think of McCarthy
coming after you for whatever reason.
