Did anyone see the announcement about RSA Security's plan
to hire ~400 programmers in India? The Boston Globe article
that I read quoted the company as saying that they could not
find enough talented programmers in the U.S.
What do people make of this? Is there really such a shortage?
Probably not, mythical man month is ringing in my head so loud right
now. My bet is they wast to have more staff "on books" to make the
company look like it has more assets than it really has.
Not that I'm blasting India but we all know for a fact they hire the
cheapest, dumbest, SoBs they can find. The smart India folk are a bit
more self-respecting and won't work for sub-walmart wages.
I also can't wait until people realize that with jobs comes quality of
life demands. Where we can hire some script monkey for five cents a
day now, 10 years from now they'll be up to well above a couple bucks a
day, then more and more....
Allow me to point out that RSA laid off quite a few programmers
back in 2001. I was one of them.
To be honest I don't see that as a bad thing. RSA *had* smart people,
you amongst them (a few developers I know of too, maybe they're still
around, who knows its been so long) but really they've just been
stagnating in their own glory for so god damn long.
If they had any sense amongst them they'd OSS their more portable
projects and get into services. Keep the crown jewels of code locked
up but let people get a sense for what they're buying into now.
I mean as a developer I have no idea what the BSAFE-C api is like. I
don't want to sign a license agreement or whatever else jazz just to
see it. That's by far the biggest turn off. My experience from my
users has been the first thing they look for are the headers, then
maybe they read the manual. They look at the headers to see what sort
of functionality the product has and if things are well defined...
Anyways, rant off.
