Compression, in itself, is just a form of substitution. It is a useful
form of preprocessing before encryption, as it removes redundancy,
useful to cryptographers when attacking without known plaintext. But
modern ciphers are expected to be secure against known-plaintext
attacks, and thus the importance of compression has diminished.
