Agreed. My brother is doing pilot training [almost got private
license] and to get to a capt. of an airline [for instance] you need
5000 hours therabouts. You need [iirc] 1000 hours to be a co-pilot or
flight tech. In short, no serious airliner would fly captains with
only 200 hours.
On the crypto front, I'd say it's not just reading but using the
material. I know I wasn't comfortable with giving out crypto advice
[professionally] until at least two years ago [5 years after I started
my adhoc partially guided tour of cryptography].
If you already have a strong enough math background [which I didn't]
then you can get through to a entry-level experience point [e.g. sorta
below where I'm at now] in a year if you study constantly and practice
the techniques [e.g. actually go out and write software or hardware or
both].
