I more widespread than that. Look at sci.space or sci.physics .
ppl with not background at all come up with all sorts of crazy
ideas. The number of ppl with a working zero point energy device is
quite staggering.
Also its common to claim that just about every professional in the field
is wrong. Of course its the same math etc that build bridges and alows
designers to get that car working the way it should. Or the same quatum
theroy that alows the laser in the DVD player to be invented and in fact
"designed". But since these ppl don't understand this stuff --it does
not concern them.
Its like a Wookie defense.
So its not really this group, but usernet in general. In fact this is
one of the few non-moderated groups i read.
