Universally available better than plaintext solution, is of cause the
zip itself. And zip files can (at least) on windows platform be
converted to self executing archives so you would not even need the
zip extractor. First compress all your files into single archive, then
re-zip that archive with a passPhrase.

New Winzip's use strong AES encryption. Winzips are shareware,but not
too picky about registration - but still they are shareware.

Note that selfexecuting .exe file archives have a limited portability,
while older password protected archives are portable.

One addioinal option (on windows) is you can also hide your files with
for examle magic (encrypteds) folders (shareware). so no interesting
files would be visible. In case attacer has access to your computer
depending on attacers skills, he could off cause install a keylogger
and thus be able to open any archive. anyway
