It's similar to playing the slots. Here, the jackpot is being the first
person in ~10 years to get JSH to admit one of his pet results is a sham.
Although the odds are stacked high against the players, the huge
reward:effort ratio nonetheless motivates their play. And as with an
accumulating jackpot, the longer James holds out, the stronger that
motivation to play.
Trying to get people to stop replying to James is like trying to shut
down Vegas.
(Incidentally, this same principle is used successfully in many video
games, particularly MMORPGs where players get together to do "runs"
hoping for "good drops.")
