My bet is "no". Instead what happened is that hitting this temporary
setback with factoring allowed fresh insights about a different area of
research (the problem with algebraic integers) to reach full consciousness.
That's marvelous! Everyone else should be excited about that too. In fact,
it's obvious they must be ("after all, I am") ... or they're lying about
their true feelings, maybe running scared again, maybe scrambling to cover
up again.

"Again"? It didn't even take a break here: I, I, I, I'm, I've, I'm, I'm,
I, I, I'm, me, ..., "me me me me me". In this telling of the tale, nobody
else exists, and the only thing worth a moment's regret is that he gave
himself too hard a time worrying about the consequences of his success:

That's our James. Pointing it out won't do him any good (or harm, IMO --
else I wouldn't), but if you notice these endlessly repeated patterns it
might save you some needless distress.
