I'm an extreme crypto newbie beyond the security engineering level usage
of it, so don't rip my head off if I ask a dumb question.
anyway, what math is required to be able to do real
"practical-theoretical" work in crypto?
by that I mean analyzing new ciphers, creating new ciphers, doing basic
but not super-advanced research, etc.
I'm currently doing Calc II in college.. will probably do Calc I-III,
Probability and Statistics I and II, and CS Discrete Math and the usual
CS undergrad theory stuff, just for my major.
someone recommended to me that I go ahead and get started with Analysis,
so I'm taking a look at a "Intro to Analysis" book now... of course, I'm
in the beginner's section that explains set theory, the theory of real
number system, advanced math notation, etc. since I never learned that
before.
I'm mainly more of a security engineering type, but I think crypto is
interesting and I'd like to pick it up as a serious hobby.
would probably help me doing real-world crypto implimentation if nothing
else.
besides, it gives me a "good reason" to study math. ;)
