Manual hashing

I like to know of some potentially viable ideas of manually
transforming an alphanumeric string to, say, 1/2 or 1/4 its
length more or less in the sense of hashing (understandably
without any expectation of qualities comparable to the common
hashing algorithms that run on computers). Thanks.
