I think the winner is Truecrypt. It is a polished product, has a fine
pedigree and is open source. There have not been any negative reports.
  There are some legal problems between it and the DriveCrypt folks.
The maximum container size is 2 GB.

I use Truecrypt for encrypting partitions and have had no problems.
There is a simple trick (which I can’t remember at the moment) for
making the encrypted partition disappear from Window Explorer. For
containers I use Safeboot Vdisk (cost money) for historical reasons, but
have tested Truecrypt and encountered no problems (Win 95, Win98SE and
WinXP).

The advantage of CrossCrypt is the potential (unrealized for me) of
being compatible is Linux. It is based on filedisk by Bo Brantén.
