Deciphering encoded, possibly compressed, files ...

I'm hoping someone here might be able to help me out, even though, strictly
speaking this isn't a encryption question.

I have an application that consists of a large library of
books/publications/etc. Each one is stored in a separate file with a "pub"
extension. Each file starts with the following (as read in a Hex Editor)

55 52 45 53 04 00 01 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00

Or the following (as read in Notepad)

URES

The rest of the file differs from file to file.

Is there anyway to decipher what the file structure would be? I have access
to what the decoded file is supposed to read (by running the supplied
application), but I'm hoping to write an app to read the files directly.
It's a pretty custom made application, so the name of the app wouldn't mean
much to anyone, I'm just hoping they used some standard file format for
storing the data. I also have a feeling that they use compression, since
the previous version of these files used to be larger.

Please also let me know if there might be a better group to post this in.

Thanks,
Harry
