You might also find an interesting read in the new "Free Trade" agreement
with Australia. (sorry don't have a link yet)
In everything Australia is good at exporting there is a phased in
introduction over an 18 year period! and if US prices for these goods fall
tariffs will be re-introduced. Plus there is a whole bunch of things
excluded such as sugar because the political cost in the US is too high.

Free trade, low tariff my ass - and you should also look at the US "export
enchantment" program before you start talking about fairness / trade
barriers and US trade in the one sentence.

In the first Gulf War my country went to war on the side of the US. In
return the US screwed Australia on a $240 million dollar wheat deal with
Indonesia - an Australian traditional market that the US promised they would
not enter via export enhancement. When Madeline Albright was caught out in
(actually giving a speech in Sydney Australia) she denied it - and two days
latter the US announced it was going to sell $200 million dollars of wheat
and "donate" $40 million dollars of wheat. The export enhancement deal was
worth, guess the magic number - $40 million.

That is how the US treats its "most reliable allies in the pacific".
