Such questions apparently could never have 'absolute' answers.
There is not even a 'proof' of security (in the absolutely
rigorous sense) for any cipher in practical use. You may
incline to believe some seemingly unanimous 'opinions' of
experts (those having some fame in the open community), or
you don't. The choice of crypto software/hardware is thus
necessarily a 'subjective' matter to some extent. The 'best'
is that you study the well-known algorithms, evaluate them
somehow yourself and implement the one of your choice
(eventually with guidance from implementations of others)
yourself. That's certainly not very satisfying for you.
But unfortunately that's life, for otherwise you have to
'believe' someone's words and that could be risky under
circumstances.
