A different newbie question: Advances since Rijndael?

I'm currently in the process of gathering information about ciphers for the
purpose of writing a review paper on cryptography. I have read many good
sources, such as Stallings and Schneier, but am aware that they are a little
out of date and am wondering what the state of play is today.

Could I possibly pick a few brains out there to get the experts opinion.
That way, I can research and get straight to the point. What have been the
major developments in the symmetric block field since Rijndael was accepted
as the AES standard? Are there any other major competitors or is this
algorithm still considered the 'standard'.

At this point in time, which would you say are the most commonly used
symmetric block encryption algorithms? Is 3DES still widely used at all in
the community/business or has it been completely outdated now?

Also, is it still true to say that ECC leads the way with asymmetric
encryption or would you say RSA still does?

Any other exciting pointers anyone can give me to research?

I am still at the stage of developing an overview, so please be gentle with
me!

Any time on this would be greatly appreciated.

Regards
Gary
