Dear Dorothy,
actually your messages on hiding crimes on the Internet are
interesting and in my opinion all starts already before a person ever
accesses the Internet. Basically, my thesis is that you can not hide
any crimes on the Internet, but you may hide identities of persons
commiting crimes, which just means that all starts before your ever
access the Internet. Personally, I have not had any personal or
private Internet access for four years knowing that it can be
monitored, which is why I have used the Internet on public systems
such as university libraries, computer rooms, tradeshows and other
places like that. In fact, I could have commited all kinds of crimes
on the Internet and nobody would have known my identity. However I
know they followed me - who ? the U.S. National Security Agency (they
call themselves as the God, but they still can not control the
randomness that is the God - the RANDOMNESS IS THE GOD). And when you
add that a person may not even have a real name, but is using an
alias, these crimes become so difficult to solve. For example, the WTC
bombers used the same public library computers as I did in Miami (in
fact they could have sat next to me, when I used these systems) and
elsewhere in surrounding areas of Miami before the event of 9/11/2001.
How would you be able to say that I was not the main lead architect of
the WTC explosions? Because you can not ! In fact, I believe that you
may have not wanted to be with terrorists (think about September,
2001). In the early 1980's I was a little computer geek here in
Varkaus, Finland and I watched a TV show on the computer crime in
England. They told that some of the best computer crime specialists
are criminal minds who do not commit crimes. Some people from the
1980's may still remember this show. Actually, it is funny, you posted
your mailing on some Uk newsgroups, because they create some great
computer crime shows in the U.K. (already when I was a little boy).
These are just my responses to your postings to me in the 1990's, when
I was too busy lurking on the Internet and reading your and other
people's messages.

John Young has just posted a copy of my paper Hiding Crimes in
Cyberspace, coauthored with William E. Baugh, Jr., on his Cryptome
site:
Or, go straight to http://cryptome.org/hiding-db.htm
This version does not have the endnotes. If you want the endnotes,
you can get an MS Word version from my Web site
http://www.cs.georgetown.edu/~denning/crypto/
or go straight to
http://www.cs.georgetown.edu/~denning/crypto/hiding1.doc
This version has the full text, but not the figures.
The paper is scheduled to appear in Information, Communication and
Society, Vol. 2, No 3, Autumn 1999, and in Cybercrime, B. D. Loader
and D. Thomas (eds.), Routledge, 1999.
It covers the use of encryption and other concealment technologies
and anonymity services by criminals and terrorists. It is a
January 1999 update of the report we did for the National Strategy
Information Center in 1997. That report is also on my Web page
now.
I apologize if someone already posted this information to the list.
I have not been tracking the messages carefully.
Regards,
Dorothy
