The bottom line is: single DES is vulnerable to
adversaries willing to sink a few hundred thousand
dollars into the effort. This has been the case for
about a decade.

Single DES is still fairly secure against the sort of
cpu power most private individuals can bring against it,
but not against large groups of such individuals.

Don't use single DES. 3DES still seems good.
