Because physics moved some time ago from the realm of physical reality
into the realm of complex mathematics. Today, most physicists can cite
chapter and verse when it comes to the mathematics of modern physics,
but they cannot describe 90% of that mathemtical theory in terms of
reality. String theory is a classic example of that. Just what exactly
does "eleven dimensions" mean, in terms of physical reality?

In the olden days, there was a plain English, physical explanation for
everything in physics. Nowadays, many physicists cannot provide
physical explanations--because the only part they've ever actually
understood is the math.
