Vendors to make an effort, but they definitely still need improvement.
For example, MS' new developer tools automatically probes new code for
buffer overflows. Ultimately it's the programmer and the team that
still has to do good code, but things like that help. MS has already
learned the value of hardened default settings (even more so than
Linux, Oracle, and Sun recently with Win2003).
Laws should be made that vendors should be made to fix them in a
timely manner and provide an easy and reliable mechanism for patching
them. I know we are a nation of too many lawyers, I just hate to see
it getting worse and infecting software too.
