the folklore is that s/38 was born out of the canceled FS (future
system) project ... multiple past post on FS:

the follow-on to s/38 was the as/400 ... built on a cisc architecture.
as/400 was moved to power/pc platform in the early 90s ... and still
sells quite a number of power/pc boxes (along with apple, aix, and
