Addendum: I realize that this is not necessary, if
(B, b) is taken as the 'reference' hardware, for the
sequence of 16 8-bit units as depicted (abstractly) in
Fig. 2, will always to written out in that order on such
hardware beginning with the leftmost unit of Fig. 2,
independent of the word size. Thus (B, b) seems to be
the best choice.
