I liked the book "Alvin's Secret Code" by Clifford Hicks, which I read
at age 10 or so. It's a kid's novel about a young nerd who explores
various simple cryptography techniques and ends up solving a mystery,
and is fun reading for kids of about that age level. It was reprinted
pretty recently, so you should be able get it from amazon.de.
However, of course, it's in English.
