As a condition of entry, each cipher's submitter agreed to make it
royalty free if selected as the AES. Rijndael was made royalty-free by
its inventors regardless of the outcome of the AES competition (which
made it an early favorite with me!).

I think that was RSA that expired in September, 2000. DH was even older.
