Event Viewer broken after sp3 update

Trying to troubleshoot another error related to updating to sp3, I cruised
over to the Event Viewer to see what error codes I was getting.
Surprisingly, I found it non-functional. I can get a list of the four
standard event logs (Application, Security, System, Internet Explorer). But
clicking on any of them yields only an error message: "Unable to complete the
operation on "System". The interface is unknown."

Any insight or advice you can provide would be appreciated.
