If it's AVG 8, don't bet that wasn't the cause of the issue. There have been numerous posts on AVG 8 wreaking havoc with updates.
Then again, we don't know if there are remnants of 'another' AV that remained on the system after it was supposed to have been uninstalled.
Norton is *notorious* for doing just that.
