In addition, with Task Manager open, click Shut Down on the menu bar at the top and see what name is listed for ' Log Off _____'

No, if I were to go ahead and log in as “user” I can look at the User Accounts and see the correct name(not "user"): as if I were properly logged in. Basically the only place I can see “user” is in the log-in screen. There is no “user” account.
The only thing I see in Scheduled Tasks is “Add Scheduled Tasks”

AL,
When you change the name of the only User account via User Accounts in the Control Panel it changes back to User ?
Are there any Scheduled Tasks set up to run under User ?
In Control Panel open Scheduled Tasks to see if that's the case.

Hello,
Can anyone tell me why logging into windows XP SP2 the user name comes up as "user" instead of the actual name used/placed into the user account (only one user called XXX on this computer)? It’s not hard to change, but it is annoying to have to change it when there is no "user" account. In this environment "user" will work though. I work for a city fire department which requires our engine computer to be properly logged on for our communications to work.
