BHO's a little more and found the reg key where they exist:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Browser Helper Objects

In here I have two CLSID's. One is for Java's SSV.dll, whereas the other
correctly correlates to the acroIEhelper.dll file installed by Adobe in the
Program files directory. However I have noted that this CLSID does not have
the NoExplorer DWORD value. Does this mean that whilst Internet Explorer can
not use the extension, Explorer itself can, and this is why it is opening in
IE (Despite the errors), or is there another reason why this is occuring?
Also why would a BHO run with Explorer?? Is this not a security risk?? What
browser helper objects use Explorer rather than IE??

Sorry just a bit mystified about this, and thought I would ask for some
expert advice!

Did you have a question? I did not see one in your post.

If what you want to do is NOT integrate Acrobat Reader in your browser,
go into Acrobat Reader's options (preferences) and disable browser
integration. That will force the browser to download the .pdf and open
in whatever is currently designated as that filetype's handler (which
would be Acrobat Reader).
