A log is created when Windows Installer attempts to install.
Go to Start > Run > copy and paste the below into the Open: line
and then click OK or press Enter
%windir%\kb893803v2.log
Post the KB893803v2.log and perhaps someone can see where the installation if failing.
If *nothing* can be installed via the update sites or Automatic Updates, suggest you try the 2 Methods laid out here: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/943144

I have just upgraded from XP home to XP professional as I wanted to use remote access..
After using the 'quick upgrade' I have 3 serious issues, with IE, security and windows installer.
I went to the microsoft site to look for updates - the site scanned my software, and downloaded windows installer 3.1 Every time I try to install this update it fails, and now I have the update icon sitting in my taskbar. It also wants to install it every time I turn off my PC.
Any suggestions please?
