Is there a set of permissions that can be applied to a file or folder
that would allow a user to open the file in Notepad or some other
program if they know the full path and name of the file but would not
allow that user to see the file in Windows Explorer?
The files exist in a folder on an XP Pro machine and are accessed via
from another PC via a mapped drive.
Right-click on the folder, Properties, Security, Advanced button. Use File -> Help and Support to search on "permissions", then click on the entry simply labelled "Permissions", click on "File and Folder Permissions" to see what they mean.
