Windows Defender - need basic information .................ts

I installed the beta defender package some time back, but have mostly
ignored it.

#1 Is it still a valid program? I think last time I tried working with it
upgrades were no longer available.

#2 How can I remove it from my computer? It does not appear in the control
panel's list of programs
