Thanks Lanwench but it isn't NTBackup it's the backup utility in XP

Ah. Well, that *is* NTBackup. :-)

Is it possible to generate this catalogue using XP
Pro backup/restore (I didn't see such an option)?

I don't use the wizard intefcace - I use the classic one.

Restore & Manage Media tab
Right-click on "file" on the left / catalog file / browse & find the file.

How can I restore from the older Windows backup files (they were
also created using the backup/restore utility in Windows XP Pro)?

Presuming NTBackup, you need to catalog the restore file/medium
first, IIRC. Then you'll be able to see what it contains.
