RE: Install of Outlook Junk Email Filter fails - MsiInstaller cod

One of the symptoms of my machine is that I can't install/un-install some
third party programs either. I think it has something to do with Internet
Registration, but you really cannot tell.
I tried to spend an MSDN incident on this last week. MS spent over two DAYS
trying to get an updated version of the MS Installer to install/run without
success.
I'm preparing to rebuild my machine from scratch now.
My question for any MS folks watching is how do you make an install program
(the MS Installer), that generates a 30 or 40 thousand line log file, that
doesn't tell you what went wrong with a failed install.
Good luck to us all.

I tried the fix suggested, and it didn't help at all. I am being passed up.
the chain of command by MS Support, and hopefully will eventually find
someone who knows what's going on.
I am convinced that the problem is with the Installer itself, not Framework,
because some Automatic Updates get installed and some don't. Yesterday AU
downloaded 7 critical updates and offered to install them. When I said go
ahead, the installs all failed. However, when I shut down my computer that
night, all of the updates installed sucessfully during the shutdown.
Thinking that something might have been fixed, I tried Microsoft Update the
next morning and had the same old problem - it starts to search for updates
but never stops. I also tried Office Update, and it behaved normally,
downloading Office 2003 SP3, but then the install failed.

Hi SL,
Good to know I'm not the only person with this problem.
I started a support incident and spent some time with an MS service tech
last week.
We did two main things, after which he proclaimed my system healed (at least
for this specific problem). I'm not completely convinced of this as I really
cannot do a decent Windows Update test since my list of critical updates went
from seven to zero after running the MSInstaller repair tool. I was able to
install a couple of the "optional" updates after the session. The two things
we did were...
1) We ran a tool that cleaned out the MS Installer data folders (CatRoot
and CatRoot2) and re-registered all the MS Installer Dll's. I think you can
get this tool via KB943552. The download/utility is called
au_client_tool_v7.exe.
2) I unstalled .Net 3.0 using a tool called dotnetfx_cleanup_tool.zip
(obviously the zipped version). This utility can remove any of the .Net
frameworks without using
MS Installer (add / remove programs). It's referenced in a couple of other
threads on this forum.
My computer is still pretty fouled up. I cannot re-install .Net 3.0., and
in fact I cannot un-install any programs sucessfully through Add/Remove
programs at all.
Good luck with your problem.

Have you received any help on this from MS or anyone else? Your error log
looks just like mine, and I have had this problem for over a month now. I
tried doing a repair install of WinXP and uninstalling Office 2003. No luck.
When I tried to reinstall Office, that failed. Fortunately I had a recent
backup of my whole disk. I have also had a problem with .NET Framework v1.1.
I tried uninstalling and reinstalling it, but that also failed. MS has
responded, but only with the "solutions" that I have already tried. Oh,
another thing that I tried was downloading and installing the latest version
of the MS Installer. This is getting to be a real pain. No wonder people
are switching to Linux.
