I would think that local policy is active. Open the REGEDIT.EXE, and look
under both HKEY_CURRENT_USER and HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE.

Go to this path in each hive:
Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer

If there is a DWORD entry with the name NoSecurityTab, and the value is set
to 1, change it to 0 and reboot.

I was in the process of moving data to a new NAS i just purchased
and needed to change the permissions on a file. I right clicked
the file, went to properties and noticed that for some strange
reason i did not have a Security tab. The only tabs that show are
'General' and 'Summary'. I tried a few other files and folders
located on local hard disks, and came up with the same results.. no
security tab!

The login i am using is a member of the Administrators group - so
why cant i view the security tab on any file or folder? For
testing purposes i created a new account, set the password, added
the new user to the administrators group and then logged in using
the new account. Still no security tab!!!!!! Is there a group
policy setting that for some odd reason is not allowing me to view
the security tab? I also tried creating my own folder on a local
drive, created a text document, saved it inside the folder and then
checked the properties - still no security tab!

any ideas!?!?!?!?!?

BTW i am running Windows XP /w SP2 and i am using an account that
is a member of the administrators group..

Using NTFS?
