Thanks for the info.
Some 'malware' turned off all notification (Firewall, Virus Protection,
AutoUpdates) so you would need to launch the security center to see the
firewall etc. status.
I found a great little (freeware/shareware) program XPFireMon which sits in
the system tray and provides info on the state of the firewall.

HI,
And remember, windows firewall can by disabled by usual trojeans and
worms.
Do not use it like that, u need at least one antivir soft for your
problem.
Try enything, but do not let all the work on firewall.
good day

I have never heard of such though if Security Center is enabled it should
warn you if the Windows Firewall is disabled if set to default values.
Having said that the Windows Firewall can protect against worms trying to
attack your computer but is not meant to protect your computer from
viruses
and spyware. You need a good antivirus and spyware protection program to
do
that which is set to auto protect mode. AVG offers a free for personal
use
antivirus program and http://pack.google.com offers an excellent free
version of Spyware Doctor.

Is there any way to have the firewall icon displayed on the system tray
when the firewall is 'on'. I have encountered the situation where the
firewall was turned off along with the notification which led to
viruses
and the like being allowed on the system.
A 'firewall on' icon would be great.
Thanks
.
