Re: windows security alert displays every 2 minutes - cannot stop

had the same trouble with the trogan blue sky im still working my way through
it its a marketing ploy to get cash out of you by a soft wear hijacker
you need to use task manager when you shut the buble of otherwise it
rewrites itself else where on the drive you also need to run an up to date
security program a number of time to kill it

I have a problem with the bubble being displayed-

"windows secutiry alert - Your computer might be at risk, click here to
install anti-virus software"

It is displaying every 2 minutes - I am not exaggerating.

If I go to the Windows Secutiry Center there is no "Virus" section that is
mentioned in a lot of places. Only 'Internet Options', 'Windows Firewall',
and 'Automatic Updates'.

Also, the option to "Change the way security center alerts me" is grey, it
cannot be clicked on.

There was some sort of update installed on the 13th September. It was
"Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool - September 2007 (KB890830)". The
problem has been since then. I tried to download the Security Center pack
again but can't because it is already installed.

I have the latest Norton Anti-Virus 2007 installed and up to date

Please give me some help. I can't believe I am the only person in the world
with this problem but cannot find an answer to it anyway.

(The pop-up warning makes a terrible noise so I cannot have sound on -
otherwise I know I would just have to put up with it)

This has nothing to do with Windows Updates. You are infected with some
variant of the Smitfraud trojan - at the very least. Do the preparatory
steps here:

http://www.elephantboycomputers.com/page2.html#Removing_Malware

Then do the specific removal steps here:
http://www.elephantboycomputers.com/page2.html#Smitfraud_Trojan -
Smitfraud, Spyaxe, Spyfalcon

You can also check to see if there are targeted removal steps for your
malware here:
Bleeping Computer removal how-to's -

When all else fails, run HijackThis and post your log in one of the
specialty forums listed at the first link above (not here, please).

Standard caveat: If the procedures look too complex - and there is no
shame in admitting this isn't your cup of tea - take the machine to a
professional computer repair shop (not your local version of
BigComputerStore/GeekSquad). Please be aware that not all local shops
are skilled at removing malware and even if they are, your computer may
be so infested that Windows will need to be clean-installed. Have all
your data backed up before you take the machine into a shop.
